The metadata generation error in https://bbpgitlab.epfl.ch/hpc/spack/-/jobs/1385016 when reproduced locally seems to be related to setuptoools_scm<8, whereas things complete normally for the latest major. I constrained setuptools_scm to pick up the latest major available in spack. Let's see how it goes.
