Proposed revisions to Stasis and Change Hierarchies

Summary

It is not clear to users of CCO how to use Stasis and Change. For example, how does an instance of Change relate to instances of other processes, such as Act of Motion wherein an object’s location is changing? Since all processes involve some change, how is a Change different from any other process? When an independent continuant is said to be "in stasis”, how is the unchanging dependent entity associated with the independent continuant clearly differentiated from other features of the independent entity? This confusion about usage is due in part to a lack of consistency in the way the terms are defined. For both terms, and their subclasses, there exists an underspecified semantics that does not clearly describe how to relate the unchanging or changing dependent entity to the instance of the Stasis or Change, or its bearer or carrier, or other processes.

In Github issue #112 it was suggested to make Stasis a part of the history of an independent continuant (the bearer of the dependent entity). This idea informs the changes suggested here. By making Stasis and Change unique kinds of processes that are parts of the an independent continuant’s history, we can identity a clear semantic pattern that can be differentiated from others within the ontology. In addition, it is also required that the dependent entity participate in the Stasis or Change.

Proposed changes to the main definitions:

Change =def “A Process that is part of the History of an Independent Continuant, and has participant some dependent Continuant that during the Change either increases or decreases in intensity, or begins or ceases to exist, and inheres in or generically depends on that Independent Continuant.”

Stasis =def “A Process that is part of the History of an Independent Continuant, and has participant some dependent Continuant that endures in a relatively unchanging condition and inheres in or generically depends on that Independent Continuant.”

This initial revision results in the redefining of most of the definitions for the top and mid-level terms in the hierarchies. The lowest level terms, e.g., ‘Stasis of Fully Mission Capable’ are left as is for now. Only the direct subclasses of Change are kept, the remaining ones are deleted as they are all redundant equivalencies providing no benefit to users.

Proposed changes are available in branch stasis-change and can be compared to the current release here
