Vagrant Box Terms of Use

This Vagrant box is built with macOS 12.1. By using this vagrant box, you are agreeing to the software license agreement for macOS. Apple's license agreement allows you to run macOS on Apple hardware. You are limited to a maximum of two VMs running macOS per-system. Prior to using the Apple Software, the End User Lessee must review and agree to be bound by the terms applicable to any software preinstalled on the Apple Software, including, but not limited to Apple’s Xcode developer software and any other Apple or third-party software.

When using with Chef Software

This box is intended solely for Your personal, non-Commercial Purposes, or Experimental Use under the Chef Software license agreement.

Is this Legal?

Obligatory disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice!

This question has been addressed by many others already. In short: yes it's legal, so long as you follow the software license terms.

All code and files contained in this repository do not include any Apple Software whatsoever. These are just metadata and files used to describe a virtual machine using Vagrant. You are expected to build your own Vagrant box image which contains the Apple Software, as distributed by Apple Inc.

How was this developed? Was any reverse engineering done?

TLDR; No! There was no reverse engineering done, nor was it necessary. Period.

Portions of this repository's software were translated and adapted from QEMU & KVM virtual machine definitions, as well as various libvirt XML templates for MacOS that can be found freely available online and distributed under Free and Open Source Software projects. Additional sources of knowledge used for developing this Vagrant Box were all Free and Open Source Software projects. No reverse engineering was necessary thanks to the free and open sharing of the Open Source Community. These projects and sources include:
