A new feature for pointers/offsets has been proposed and discussed in email threads.

This tracker will be updated when the official spec/experimental-feature document is posted, and will track the resolution of any issues with that proposal.

Use of offset / length / count triplets noted in IBM mainframe SMF records to locate sections within the record. If the sections are genuinely discontiguous then this feature will be needed in order to parse at least some of the SMF records.
