This happens because I don't have an Apple developer ID. I'm not really ready to start paying Apple $100 a year just to allow apps to work on macOS without scaring/harassing the user.
The way to bypass this is to open your security settings and allow the app to run. It doesn't do anything that will damage your computer and you're welcome to look over the code or build from source :D The Xcode project should be up to date.
That's kind of awful. Maybe we shouldn't have a binary MacOS release package if that's the experience users are going to get. Maybe we should just have the Windows download, and refer Linux and MacOS users to instructions to compile from source.
That's really not a bad idea. I may do that, though this year I'm canceling my amazon prime account so I can just reallocate those funds to an apple developer id :D
MacOS pops up the following window when opening the latest release.
