  • can't use apostrophe because of its use in indicating elision
  • factors of visual correspondence (~ looks like circumflex) vs typing ease/efficiency (= for circumflex doesn't require shift)
    • exactly how important is requiring a shift? Isn't that most of the benefit of using punctuation keys: you can type one key per diacritic?
