##Welcome To The Hack The Stacks Challenge!
All participants must make sure they have accepted their GitHub invitation and are on a GitHub team in the HackTheStacks organization! ALL of your repositories MUST be created in the Hack the Stacks org.
The Hack The Stacks challenge is a 24 hour solution-building event produced by AMNH's BridgeUp: STEM, an educational initiative focused on the intersection of computer science and science with an after-school program for high school girls and underrepresented middle schoolers and the awarding of annual fellowships to women scientists to pursue their research at the museum.
The weekend will kick off with an info session that all participants must attend on Friday, November 18th from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. to review the challenges and allow you to form teams (and the first 80 participants to check-in on Friday will get to go on a secret archives tour!). The challenge work starts on Saturday, November 19th at 2:00 p.m. and runs until Sunday, November 20th at 2:00 p.m. with project demos from 2:30 p.m. until museum closing. Your team will have about 24 hours to build something that solves some (or all!) of a particular problem statement. You may even collaborate with several teams to work on different aspects of the same solution, or across multiple solutions - Hack The Stacks is all about cooperation, not competition. The emphasis is on building working prototypes, not clickable demos; even if your project is incomplete, having a solid foundation to build upon will be a huge step forward for the advancement of library science and can benefit museums, libraries, and cultural institutions around the world.
We hope you'll choose to spend Saturday night with us at the museum -- we'll have cots and a dedicated sleeping area (just bring your sleeping bag and pillow) if you need your rest -- but if not, you will be able to exit the museum Saturday night and return at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. (Note that sleeping over on Friday night will not be possible and we do not provide any travel or lodging reimbursement at this time.)
There will also be public programming on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. featuring winning projects from previous events (Hack the Universe and Hack the Dinos) as well as an overview of the challenges for Hack the Stacks. Demos will be presented Sunday from 3:00 p.m. - Museum close and are open to the public! We hope you'll want to invite friends, family, and coworkers to see what you've built. All Sunday activities are free with museum admission.
Good luck!
