code-server + nginx - Help for subdomain configuration

Hi, I would like to use code-server to develop a React app. I was struggling with the proxy approach, and I read in the FAQ that using sub-domains was simpler and cleaner.

I am looking for help as I have not been able to configure the sub-domains on code-server. I have had a look at the FAQ and the resolved issues but still could not make it work.

So far:

• my DNS records / SSL certificates are properly setup
• mycodeserverdomain.com/proxy/3000 "works" (not for my app but I get my JSON payload if a set up a dummy server)
• my NGINX proxy redirects https://3000.mycodeserverdomain.com as if it were https://mycodeserverdomain.com (that is, I get the IDE, not my JSON)

My NGINX config:

Have you also started code-server with the --proxy-domain flag? It should look like:

code-server --proxy-domain mycodeserverdomain.com

Once you've done that going to https://3000.mycodeserverdomain.com should proxy port 3000.

Thanks. Not sure how to specify that parameter as I am running code-server via docker-compose? It this incompatible with the use of subdomains?

When launching with docker-compose, the following appears in the console (even though proxying won't work as described earlier):

I realize that I am actually using a 3d level domain, something like vscode.mydomain.com, I was expecting code-server to serve my app at https://3000.vscode.mydomain.com. Could this be the reason?

Ahh yup in that case you'll want --proxy-domain vscode.mydomain.com.

I should also mention since you already have NGINX running you could use it instead! For example by proxying that port specifically or doing something more generic. For example I've used something like this in the past:

server_name "~^(?<proxyport>[^.]+)\.vscode\.mydomain\.com$";
location / { 
  proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:$proxyport; 
}

But that's less ideal if you need code-server's authentication.
