South Asia and Latin America data and insights

For this project, I pulled data from the World Bank’s Global Financial Inclusion Database. I focused on two indicators:

1. The percentage of adults (15+) not worried about experiencing financial hardship from COVID-19
2. The percentage of adults (15+) with a financial institution account

I narrowed in on South Asia and Latin America & Caribbean to get a closer look at how financial vulnerability and access to banking services vary across these regions.

To visualize the patterns, I used Tableau to create four world maps: two for each region, one showing financial hardship resilience and the other showing account ownership.

Key takeaways:

1. Financial inclusion and financial security don’t always go hand-in-hand. Even when people have bank accounts, many still worry about financial hardship.
2. In South Asia, places like India and Nepal stand out with higher rates of account ownership, but financial vulnerability is still an issue across the board.
3. In Latin America & Caribbean, a lot of countries have fairly high banking access, but the “not worried” rates are still pretty low, meaning financial anxiety is widespread even when people are technically "included" in the financial system.
4. Just having access to banking isn’t enough. Broader economic stability and safety nets seem to matter just as much, if not more.
