It's a very long time since I used Emacs, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if stuff has stopped working. I don't think that looking at this will get anywhere near the top of my TODO list for a very long time - so please feel free to look into it yourself and send a pull request if you fix it.

No worries, this doesn't mean you need to be the one to fix it.
Having given the greenlight that's contributions are welcome is already great :)

Unfortunately I've never touched at Emacs package development. So this will likely stay like this for long but at least it's documented and open to contributions.

From a quick look, I think \\[%\\(.\\|\n\\)+?\\(#.*?\\)\\(\n\\|%\\]\\) will match -- It looks for any chars, including %], between [% and #

[% IF ... %]
... "#"...%]
