After routine update of my server (debian sid) I am no longer able to start zero-ui development:

Following some advice found online I tentatively changed the line as:

    "dev": "concurrently \"cd frontend && NODE_OPTIONS=--openssl-legacy-provider cross-env FAST_REFRESH=true yarn start\" \"cd backend && cross-env NODE_ENV=development ZU_DEFAULT_USERNAME=admin ZU_DEFAULT_PASSWORD=zero-ui nodemon ./bin/www --ignore data/db.json\"",

but it doesn't work at all:

Note this does not seem to be the same problem I found on the internet (breaking change node v16->v17) as I currently have:

How can I overcome this?

Hello, @mcondarelli. Seems to be something is wrong with the your dev environment, as the ZeroUI core has not changed a lot. You should check the openssl libraries installation and the nodejs itself. Also check the node_modules folder, you should remove it and install the packages one again

I tried removing completely .yarn/cache/ .husky/ and node_modules/
After a full yarnpkg install (showing several "deprecation" messages) problem is still here.
Since this is a LXD container I will stop it and create a new "clean" one, but I suspect there's some incompatibility with newer packages :(

Confirmed.
I went to the exercise to recreate a minimal container giving only the following commands:

Create container and log as root:

lxc launch images:debian/sid zt1-dev
lxc exec zt1-dev -- bash

Basic system setup (as root)

adduser --gecos 'ZeroTier Admin' --disabled-password zero
apt update
apt install -y git yarnpkg curl gnupg libssl1.1

login as unprivileged user zero:

The above bug is still here ;(
I will go again through the exercise using another distribution as base as I strongly suspect something is afoot with Sid.

Also this is confirmed: downgrading from "Sid" to "Bookworm" leads to a working development environment.
I think we can close this, unless dome kind soul can divine what's going wrong there.

I ran into the very same problem when using Node v18. I'm using nvm so I switched to Node v16 and the problem was gone. Considering Node v16 will stop being supported eventually and Node v18 is in the Active development phase, adding support for Node v18 could be useful!
