To add to this, on element-x the avatar is not shown for the room, but it is showing in the messages and the member list (and yes it seems that element x does consider this a direct message).

Also changing the profile by using /myroomavatar or /myroomnick seems to make the avatar appear again on element X, but clearing the cache make the avatars disapear again.
