Logging in manually bounces me via MAS ~3 times

Steps to reproduce

1. Where are you starting? What can you see?

• log in manually
• change homeserver to lant.uk
• complete the MAS redirect (I'm already signed in via MAS)
• get bounced back to "you're about to log in to lant.uk"
• do this dance a few times
• then get to the confirm your identity screen and it says "an error has occurred"
• dismiss the error
• see the confirm your identity screen
  • there's a Syncing spinner at the same time, I understand why but it feels odd
• enter recovery key and finally complete login
