Official animated Video contest to bring traction ?

Friction is really starting to look good, and despite its shortcoming, is becoming usable.

For now I don't think there is a lot of professional users, giving after effect is too widely used.

Maybe we could setup an official video contest, with a theme, taking place every month, to try to interest people to learn friction !
The winner's video could be showcased as a "splash video" at the soft startup.
Ideally a button could open the project file If a user wants to take a look !

What do you think ? I really feel this could federate the groups of curious/enthusiasts interested in friction ! And to be featured on the soft startup would really be rewarding, like inkscape does with their contests !

Gaining traction has not been a priority for me (but I do want to promote Friction more after v1.0), as Friction is just a tool I and some others use (at work and for education).

More users = more "noise", my inbox (related to Friction) already has a backlog going back to early 2024 😄 (probably 2023 also)

As-is I don't really have much time for OSS projects at the moment, I work two jobs and do education stuff on the side.

After Friction v1.1 I need to seriously rethink how I use my time, and for Friction to be a priority some kind of funding needs to happen, I don't work for free 😄

We only have a splash screen on Windows, and that's just images. I don't think that's the best option. Open for suggestions (we have a "welcome" screen that could be used for something).

Yeah you're right, i could definitely not be aware about other pros working with it, it is just my impressions regarding the friction commmunities (github, discord) :)

Of course, it would be great to manage some sustainability in friction "dev model", i think some users already ask questions about "how to fund or donate". I don't know if this would be a sufficient income, but at least there would be multiple people interested to help in friction dev ! :)

Agreed, but it would also mean (posibly) more contributors, code or funding ! :)
And about time to manage the communities, mails... this i guess you could find some people to help (I would happily give some time to help to sort/answer issues, discussions...). Just some thoughts here !

As i see it, the "only" thing which would take time would be to think and setup the reward (splash/welcolme screen, access to project or not).
Ideally it would be a separate repo, with a video replaced every time a new one is setup, and friction would download it from here ? This would request an internet connection, but no modification on friction itself as a package, so no wasted time for you as a dev ?

I'm on linux, so i was talking about the welcome screen, my bad ! yep that would be the best place i think, also opens for suggestions, but this could be a nice way showcasing users creations !

If we set this up as a separate repo, we could bundle the project in a zip file, downloaded, unzipped and opened on click ? I recall after effect did that a while ago with their splash screen (you were able to get them in secret menu or something like this) and it was great to explore them as a new user !

Some kind of sponsorship (from companies etc) would be nice, or as a last resort paywall binaries.

I see what you mean with "small donations", i don't know it monthly donos would also be a pain to manage or not (patreon like).
But yeah i guess sponsorship is the most stable way !
and when you say paywall binaries, you mean "selling" the binaries while keeping the code oss, as ardour does ?

Cool ! i will think about the contest, rules guidelines and else, and post these infos here ! I guess a first iteration could be done without the showcase reward, to test the format ! :)

i followed your enve tutorials on yt, thanks for that too, they were incredible !
About the contest, the idea is to give a theme and let people do a very short video about it i think, so your short film will not comply to this but can definitely be used in a demo/showcase about friction if you're ok with it ? Here is the github issue where we talked about that : #452

Did you try to reopen your enve workfiles with friction ? I would be curious to know about compatibility !

And if you're interested, here is a discord about friction (disclaimer : i'm now the admin, so yep this is advertising hehe :) ) not the most active, but going somewhere ! Anyway, awesome to see you around here with friction !
