We'd like to be able to handle systems of natural deduction where the context for an inference is given by earlier lines, rather than by the inferential dependencies of the inferred formula. See Carnap/Carnap#3 (comment). In this context, it might also be easier to give premises a natural ordering in the established sequent, a la #35.
