Microsoft Visual SourceSafe is a version control management system that runs on the Windows platform, and apparently it runs under Wine on Linux also.

There's an article about SourceSafe on Wikipedia. It's not as critical of the flaws of VSS as most web articles on VSS are on the web.

Microsoft itself has an article describing lots of the details that describe the design of the database: details. Esp. the chapter about the "How Visual SourceSafe Tracks Files" is interesting to read, if you plan to understand how the conversion process of vss2svn will work.

There are also other SourceSafe compatible tools that run on Unix, Linux, Solaris, and Mac.
