Figures, in particular for 2-column layouts?

Great package! However, I am struggling with inserting figures. With the 5p option, figures inserted via usual markdown/pandoc syntax inevitably end up quite messed up. Suggestions?

The template doesn't really touch anything within the main body. So the issue is probably related to something else. If you could provide a very minimal working example, I could perhaps take a stab at it.
