I think it would be better to keep the section as it currently is. This allows to set up a minimal build. Your changes probably also slow down the build process.

I suggest adding a second section with your full code instead of replacing the current one

Yes, i'd concur with @ByteHamster, as the README is only supposed to give a minimalistic example to get up an running. Your changes are quite specific and more about doing CI with gradle, and less particular to this image, i suppose.
I'm happy to put this into a Wiki page, but i don't want to "scare away" potential users by making it look overly complicated to use the image. ;-)

Makes sense. Just wanted to push back since this has turned out to be the best combo for me, fully integrated builds and unit/instrumentation testing.

I got this error when I tried to use your version of .gitlab-ci.yml
Is it still working or is it my problem?

Please ensure KVM is properly installed and usable.
