Different header and footer on the first page of a generated word file

I would like to create a word DOCX document using a markdown input. I already customized the reference word document to edit the styles to match the desired resulting layout.

The problem is that the first page of this layout has different header and footer than the rest of the document:

• The header has a different margin size
• The header has no page counter
• The footer has a logo

When doing the word document manually, I would use a section break at the end of the body of text on the first page, and adapt the header and footer for the first section without affecting the rest of the document. I don't see a similar way of proceeding with pandoc.

I searched several questions on github and stack overflow but to no avail. The only somewhat related issue: #9241

As the linked issue indicates, you can put raw openxml in to adjust section properties.
e.g. at the end of the first section, put this:

This works out of the box for me without injecting any OpenXML. In your reference-doc.docx, simply use a different header and footer on the title page. Open reference-doc.docx in Word and double-click in the header or footer so that the 'Header & Footer' tab opens. Under 'Options', tick 'Different First Page':

Once you've updated your reference-doc.docx, just run pandoc with the --reference-doc option and the output should have a different header and footer on the title page.

The way this works on an OpenXML level is that the following sectPr element is included in your reference-doc.docx under /word/document.xml, which pandoc also includes in the output:

      <w:headerReference w:type="first" r:id="rId10" />
      <w:footerReference w:type="first" r:id="rId11" />

Word saves the header and footer for the first page in separate files, which are referenced by rId10 and rId11 above (the rIds will be different in your case ofc).
