Ability to control tab width

It would be great to have the possibility to change the (i guess) default tab width of 90px to something smaller? Especially in the case of just having an icon and no text there is a lot of space 'wasted'.
I tried to use card-mod but wasn't successful so far. Maybe it's not even possible.
