unless this have been fixed since the last release, i recently enabled the netstat plugin and after about 8 hours of running whenever i start a process (like clicking the xterm button) i get fork() failed: Out of memory. and indeed top shows that lxpanel uses 4 GB of memory. this happened twice until i realized that it's due to the netstat plugin, and removing it from the panel fixes the issue.

(what i also found out is that you can restart lxpanel by sending a SIGUSR1 to it, which is very practical as otherwise you'd have to basically restart X or kill and start lxpanel from a terminal window which you can't close afterwards.)
