Is there just Main Template and Page Template, or can you make any custom templates you want just by Type: Template and then call that template in a page's front matter?

Addendum: really, what would be helpful is if there were also a Post Template, so that we could define completely separate templates for main, posts, and pages. Same basic logic as the new Page Template, in that if you have a Post Template, it will be used for posts instead of the Main Template.

Answering the first question: yes, any entry with Type: Template and a Title will become a template that can be used with Template: Title of Template on any other entry (page or post).

And yes, I love your idea for a default post template. Currently the default behavior is that the site’s “main” template serves in that capacity, but I think it makes sense to be consistent and define more defaults. I’ve also been thinking about other ways to tie templates to entries in a dynamic way... maybe though tags or other means. Open to thoughts here!

(FWIW, my addendum was prompted by my realizing that the blog re-theme I was considering was stymied only by needing a Post Template, when I'd spent hours thinking the obstacle was way, way more complicated.)

I'm realizing only right now that if I think of my Main Template as my post template, and make a different Landing Template and a landing page, unless I am missing something, I actually can do my re-theme even without having Post Template be a thing—just have a Landing Template (new front page), Main Template (acts as post template), and a Page Template (for pages).
