Why the cache is separated by steps? #43

Is there a real reason for the cache system to be restarted at each steps?

I ask the question for because the cache starting process takes two seconds for each step, which is annoying when you use checkpoints.

It also could simplify the code and reduce the computation done to restart, thus be more robust.
