Setting image does not work (tested iOS 7 + 8). I set the image using

    [self setHeaderImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"demo_1"]];

The image is tested in other UIImageViews, and the image views are there "tested with background color"

Looks like it's working for me. Any chance you could send over the image you're trying to use?
