Set parent directory (../) for output-dir

Hi!

I'd like to have something like this:

root/
├── docs/             
│   └── README.qmd
└── README.md

With README.qmd that looks like this:

format: gfm
output-file: README.md
output-dir: ../

Maybe I misunderstood how output-dir behaves, but README.qmd rendered file is always at docs/README.md.

Update, it works with output-dir: ... Not the behavior I expected, but at least it works.

Update2: it only works if I set output-dir: .. from the CLI.

This works, whatever I set for output-dir:

quarto render docs/README.qmd --output-dir ..

This does not, whatever I set for output-dir:

quarto render docs/README.qmd

output-dir is a project level option, thus it lives in _quarto.yml as documented.

Then the path is defined from where you are calling Quarto.

That's not the first time I make this mistake, thanks.

Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do without a _quarto.yml? I couldn't find a way.
